Back from the holidays and it's a relief to be back at drama! After a lovely reunion and introduction for all our new students, we set to work on relaying the events of our holidays. I was in a group of four with Matt, Jefferson and Macka. The aim was to combine everyone's holidays into a small skit, that hopefully linked together successfully. After sharing our stories, we came up with a plan. We began with Jefferson's scuba diving adventure, lead into Macka's plane ride (where I did my Trewlaney impression) and then into Matt's lady boy experience in Koh Samui. Overall it was a fairly smooth performance, and we had heaps of fun.
The lessons following this, we suggested topics that we could do our collage skit on, and came up with a really diverse list. Our homework was to chose our favourite five, and mine included diseases, relationships, humanisation, social and acceptance. We also watched our Commedia and Greek/Roman Theatre performances on video. It was really intriguing to see all our performances from the previous terms, and I learnt that my movement on stage needs to be more expanded and energetic.
Week 2
In this week's lesson we got our groups, and mine consists of Macka, Cate and me. After much discussion and debate, we decided that it would be best if we did obsession for our topic. Although we know we want to do something related to this, we are unsure exactly about what sort of obsession we want to explore. We have shortlisted these to partying, abuse of drugs/alcohol and relationships.
Week 3
This week consisted of us staying in groups to plan out our assessment piece. We finally decided on doing obsession with partying, and added a background story for our main character and sub-plots. We've decided that our skit will be focused more on the seriousness of the issue, and we aim to make it something akin to what we did for Jo last year. So far we have around 5-6 characters, and most of them revolve around the main character, who I am decidedly playing. We wanted to show that the obsession with party was a mixture of many different outside influences, such as bad single-parenting, peer pressure friends and school work.
Our script is coming along, and everyone in the group is making the effort to contribute ideas and constructive criticism when needed. Although, we need to be more useful with our time, as we didn't even have a complete script complete by Thursday's lesson. We keep getting distracted by others and topics that are unrelated to drama and such.
We did have a drama party for my birthday on Tuesday though, which was lots of fun cause Beth made everyone wicked party hats which they stuck on their heads. It was heaps of fun, and I can't wait till the next one! :)
Week 4
In today's lesson, my group sat down to discuss, fix and lengthen our script. Although we managed to convey a lot of ideas and stories, we did not cover as much ground today as we should of. My group and I are finding it extremely easily to become sidetracked, but I also believe we were all tired for it being the end of the week. We are not yet complete with it, but have planned to have a draft prepared for Monday's lesson, which I will be writing. We plan to go over this script, adding and subtracting as we go, to prepare for our final project.
Week 5
This week was mostly spent on developing our plays, as well as making any changes to our original plan if we needed to. My groups is going alright, though I am worried that we aren't being as focused as we should be during this stage. We all keep getting distracted with random topics, as well as other students in the class, and this consequently means that our play isn't as established as I would like it to have been.
We all just need to sit down, finish writing the script and move onto blocking it on stage. I do also feel that it's harder worker in a small group, especially when we have planned to have so many characters, and to also change our scenes quite rapidly. I'm not sure if my other group members understand the meaning of 'collage', especially when it comes to making a piece using it as a technique.
Hopefully next week's lesson will prove to be more productive, especially because we don't seem to have much time left before we are assessed on it.
Week 6
Unfortunately this week's lesson seemed to get us nowhere, and I'm especially disappointed because we haven't even finished the script. This shows an obvious lack of motivation, organisation and team work in our group. It will be surprising if we are even ready to perform next week, considering our distracting actions in class, inability to finish the script or the fact we haven't even started on our blocking.
I'm quite dreading our performance, especially because it's in front of a group of people, and not just Ms. Weston and the drama class. I have this irking feeling our performance won't be very successful or well done.
Week 7
The first half of the week involved rushed practices, as well as the changing of the end of our script - and I have the feeling this wasn't the best idea. The changing of the ending meant a whole different moral outcome, and it also changed the message we were trying to convey. If we all were a bit more organised and more involved in the process of writing and creating, we would have come out with a much better product.
On the performance day, we were lucky enough to not have to do our performance in front of the year 11s. The seemed extremely intimidating, and I felt that our play was horrible in comparison to some of the other groups. Again I am extremely worried that our lack of dedication will reflect poorly within our performance on Monday lunch...
